Talk by Holly Connell Schaaf

Through ethological literary analysis, discussions of her teaching, and her own poems, Holly Connell Schaaf will explore encounters between human and non-human animals. Schaaf teaches in Boston University’s writing program, and describes encounters in the urban wilds of Boston during her experimental writing course Imagining Animal Minds. She also ties in contemporary Irish poetry and encounters in the agrarian environment of County Cavan, Ireland, to explore relationships between humans and other animals. These relationships are unavoidably global, yet are also the result of intense connections to varied local ecosystems whose inhabitants have different relationships to the land. Considering these relationships, Schaaf will bring together a diverse range of disciplines and offer opportunities for transcending supposed binaries between academic inquiry and the rest of the world.
